Mission to the USA

The Mission to the U.S.A. Program of the Synod of the Covenant is a short-term opportunity for churches to be on the receiving end. Individual congregations host a Christian leader from an ecumenical partner denomination for four to six weeks. The “mission partner” becomes a missionary to that congregation, serving on the staff as a parish associate. The goals of the Mission to the USA Program are to:

· Educate members of participating churches about another part of the world and the challenges facing Christians there,

· Provide a fresh perspective on the gospel of Jesus Christ

· Help U.S. Christians acquire a deepened understanding of the global nature of Christ’s church,

· Challenge U.S. Christians to greater faithfulness our own country.

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Synod of the Covenant Mission to the USA Program is to provide short term opportunities for individual congregations to be on the receiving end of a mission partnership with a church leader from a global ecumenical partner denomination.

Detail Description:

We do not own the Gospel. Churches outside the United States, some of whom have grown out of Presbyterian mission work, live lives of radical obedience to the Gospel. They may demonstrate energy and vision that can infuse a new vitality into the lives of churches in this country. Through personal contact, Mission to the USA provides an opportunity for sharing another’s experience of the gospel and creative interchange of faith. A wide array of God given gifts of rich spiritual and theological resources are shared across geographic and cultural boundaries. Focus is on personal relationships and global awareness, not programmatic, financial or official church-to-church matters.

Our History:

The roots of Mission to the USA in the Synod of the Covenant began in 1975 with a one hundred thousand dollar grant from United Presbyterian Women's Opportunity Giving. Rev. Ray H. Keily of Grosse Pointe Memorial Church in Michigan had a vision for the program, called at that time, "Ecumenical Pastors Project". Eventually the name changed to Ecumenical Parish Program, including clergy and lay leaders from around the world. The Grosse Pointe model became the foundation for the Mission to the USA Program at the General Assembly level.

In 2005 the name changed to Mission to the USA to reflect the true purpose of the program - for participating churches to be on the receiving end.

Partner Organizations:

For thirty five years the Synod has worked in partnership with General Assembly and host congregations as church leaders from ecumenical partner denominations around the world have come to this country to participate in the program. In 2011 the General Assembly will no longer be a partner in this program.
